Hatsune Miku and Future Stars: Project Mirai (初音ミク and Future Stars Project mirai?) is a 2012 rhythm game released for the Nintendo 3DS on 8 March 2012 in Japan. It serves as a spinoff to the Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA series. The game is notable for the Nendoroid "chibi" art style the characters appear in.

Gameplay[]

As the game is a spin-off from the Project DIVA series, there are numerous differences between the game and the original series. Most prominent of which is the art style of the game as characters appear in a "Nendoroid-style": super deformed versions based on the Nedoroid figure style from Japanese manufacturer Good Smile Company in which characters have heads that are three times the normal size and not proportionate to the body. Though the game is still a rhythm game, the way the gameplay mechanics work is entirely different from the Project DIVA series. In addition, the game does not feature the Edit Mode of the Project DIVA series, while the DIVA Room Mode is replaced by the game's My Room mode whereby players similarly get to interact with their Outfits in a room. The game includes an AR (Augmented reality) Mode, where the characters will appear on AR cards viewed with the Nintendo 3DS camera.[1]

For the game's primary gameplay, its music mode, it uses what it calls the "Rhythm Circle". A, B, X, and Y Buttons will appear around the border of a circle, and a pointer will appear from the center of the circle extending all the way outside the circle's border. It will then turn in a clockwise manner according to the song and when the pointer passes the button, the player has to press the face button on the 3DS. Similar to the series, the player's time accuracy will also be rated on a similar scale and manner that will be displayed on the bottom of the screen. There are 6 levels starting that go from 0 to 5 (MAX). Players start the song at Level 1 and will increase or decrease depending on the player's performance on the song. If mistakes are made at Level 0, the song will end prematurley. If the player reaches Level 5, the Rhythm Cirlce will gain a gold hue and a rainbow circle will appear on the center. Also, Melody Icons known as a "Chance Circle" will appear and players can press any face button when the pointer is pointed to them. Successfully clearing Rhythm Circles with Chance Circles will lead to highlighted Melody Icons at the end called an "SP Marker". Hitting an SP Marker will lead to high score points. After clearing a song, the player will be redirected to a results screen where they will be graded based on how well they played the song's rhythm chart.

The PVs of the songs in-game are partly animations of the characters like in the previous games, but some songs include the original music video with additional 3D effects. As opposed to the previous games, changing the character will also change the voice in the song in some cases. One song in particular ("Watashi no jikan") also has a change in the lyrics when sung by a different character.[1][2]

The game's in-game currency are called Mirai Points and function similarly, if not the same, to the DIVA Points from the main series. They can be obtained from clearing songs and can be used to unlock Outfits and Room Items.

Development[]

Project Mirai has been in development as early as mid-2010 and was eventually publicly announced on 13 September 2011 under the working title "Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai". A teaser trailer was released on the same day showing some of the game's features with a set release date for Spring 2012. The character inclusion at first featured Miku, as well as Kagamine Rin and MEIKO.[3] On 24 November 2011, the game's final name was unveiled as "Hatsune Miku and Future Stars: Project Mirai" and the release date was revealed to be 8 March 2012. The announcement also included the addition of new songs: Atsuzou-kun's "Tricolore Airline", mothy's "Aku no Musume", and mikumix's "LOL -lots of laugh-". It also featured Megurine Luka's inclusion in the game and also announced that the game will include a special feature to change the song's vocalist for certain songs.[4]

On 15 December 2011, it was announced that Internet Co., Ltd. vocal GUMI, the mascot of the vocal software Megpoid, will be featured as a special guest star in the game. Her appearances, however, are limited to the 2D PVs featured in the game. The announcement also featured Kagamine Len and KAITO's inclusion in the game and the addition of four more songs: Hachi's "Matryoshka", EasyPop's "Happy Synthesizer", sunzriver's "reverse rainbow", and 40mP's "Mousou Sketch".[5] On 18 December 2011, it was announced that an Outfit based on Snow Miku 2012 would be included in the game.[6] On 12 January 2012, it was revealed that producer DECO*27 was producing the game's theme song and a commericial for the game was released online, which featured clips of the game's opening movie. Two more songs for the game were also revealed, which are the game's theme song "Yumeyume" by DECO*27, and mothy's "Aku no Meshitsukai".[7]

On 26 January 2012, more information on the rhythm gameplay was revealed, as well as the game's full opening movie being uploaded online, and the addition of more songs: scop's "Animal Fortune-telling", Kuwagata P's "Kimi no Taion", Junky's "Melancholic", and JimmyThumb P's "No Logic".[8] On 9 February 2012, more information on the game's AR feature were revealed, as well as the ability to leave comments on a song's PV in Theater Mode. Also announced were the songs "On The Rocks", newly written for the game by OSTER project, Nanou's "Hello/How are you?", and Yuuyu's "Deep Sea Girl".[9] On 8 March 2012, the day of the game's release, two more songs were officially revealed: kz's "Finder (DSLR remix - re:edit)" and Yuuyu's "Clover♣Club".[10]

Outfits[]

Main article: /Outfits

Project Mirai features a total of 44 Outfits, including 6 characters and 38 different costumes to choose from. There was a contest held by piapro where users would submit a costume based on jewelry accents and the winning entry would be made into a Costume for the character to wear in the game.[11]

Promotion[]

A playable demo version of the game was featured during Tokyo Game Show 2011 from 15 September to 18 September.[3] The limited edition version of the game included a petit-Nedoroid figure of Hatsune Miku, special decoration stickers, and a special cleaner.[4] Pre-ordering Project Mirai at specific retails would give players a specially made tote dubbed the "Mirai no Tote", designed by Chiho.[12]

An "in-store experience" demo of Project Mirai was made available at six cities in Japan on 18 February 2012. The demo included "Watashi no jikan", "Tricolore Airline", "PIANO*GIRL", and "LOL -lots of laugh-". Those that have tried the demo would recieve a certificate of participation that includes a disposable hand warmer.[13] Another demo was later made available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop on 22 February 2012, which included the songs "Tricolore Airline", "SING&SMILE", and "LOL -lots of laugh-", and the AR feature.[14]
