Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA ƒ (初音ミク -Project DIVA- ƒ?) is a 2012 rhythm video game that was released in 30 August 2012 for the PlayStation Vita in Japan. It is the fifth entry in the Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA series following the earlier PlayStation Portable titles. A PlayStation 3 version, titled Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F (初音ミク -Project DIVA- F?), was released on 7 March 2013. The PS3 version was localised and later released both physically and digitally in North America on 27 August 2013, becoming the first game in the series to be released in English. It was then released in Europe as a digital-only title on 4 September 2013. The Vita version was also localised and was released on March 2014 in North America and Europe as a digital-only title.

It is the first stand-alone game to be released for both consoles (not counting the Dreamy Theater titles on the PS3). The Asian versions of the Vita version of Project DIVA ƒ are compatible with the PlayStation Vita TV console but it is necessary to use the DualShock 4 controller due to mandatory touch controls in the rhythm gameplay not supported by the DualShock 3 controller. In addition, the player cannot use the AR Mode features.[1]

Gameplay[]

The game retains the same basic gameplay mechanics from the series albeit with several new changes, most notably the addition of the "Star" symbol to the game's existing symbols of cross, circle, square, triangle and arrows. The "Star" symbol represents the "Scratch" move where instead of pressing the face buttons as usual, players rub the screen (Vita version) or flick the left and right sticks (PS3 version).[2][3]

"Chance Time" has been modified from previous installments, with each successful beat filling a star shaped gauge on the bottom left of the screen. When filled, it triggers a final Star symbol that, if successfully scored, will change the outcome of the song's PV scene. Another new mechanic is the "Technical Zone"; when it occurs during a song, players must maintain an uninterrupted combo within a particular section of a song for additional score and grade points.

Additional features like DIVA Room and Edit Mode will also returns with additional features.[2][3][4]

The game features graphical improvements over its predecessors in light of the PlayStation Vita's higher processing power compared to the PlayStation Portable. The models in the game are also based on the PlayStation Portable predecessors rather than the Dreamy Theater models, which have a slightly different art style. There are also improvements in the animations of the characters, such as smoother movements for Miku's hair and Rin's ribbons; the game also features improved facial expressions and lighting with real-time lighting computation being added into the game.[2]

AR/Studio Mode[]

Both the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3 versions feature an extra mode that is exclusive to each version:

  • AR Mode, which is PlayStation Vita exclusive, is an augmented reality feature that let's Miku and the other characters appear as if they are in the real world via the Vita's camera function. Two of the features in this mode include Portrait Mode, which let's players set a pose for the characters of their choosing and take a photo, which will then show up in the Vita's Photos app, and AR Live Mode, which requires the Live Studio Marker card that is included with the game. This feature has Miku performing songs as if she is performing on stage.
  • Studio Mode, which is PlayStation 3 exclusive, functions similarly to AR Mode, but with stock backgrounds for the Photo Studio feature and an actual stage for the Live Mode feature, which is based on the stage from the "DAIBA de DIVA" special event at Tokyo Joypolis in 2012.

Development[]

Development for the game first began in 2011 before the previous entry in the series, Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Extend. The game is jointly developed by the development teams behind the PlayStation Portable entries in the series as well as the team behind Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Arcade.[2] A new entry in the Project DIVA series, tentatively titled NEXT HATSUNE MIKU Project DIVA, was first teased by SEGA on Christmas Day 2011, when the official SEGA feat. Hatsune Miku Niconico and YouTube channels uploaded a teaser video of the game with the PV for doriko's "Cat Food" and a planned release for 2012.[5][6] On 9 April 2012 SEGA posted a teaser site online announcing that they would be revealing the next entry in the Project DIVA series on 12 April 2012.[7]

The game was then officially revealed on 12 April 2012 as a multi-platform game for both the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3, marking the series' official debut on both platforms (Dreamy Theater software previously released for the PS3 were not actual full games for the console). Development was focused on the PlayStation Vita first before being shifted over to the PlayStation 3 at the later part of its development cycle and hence the Vita version was released earlier in Summer 2012 while the PS3 version world relese in 2013.[2] A new trailer for the game was uploaded to franchise's official channels and it goes into detail about the new game mechanics such as the Scratch Melody Icons and also reveals that wowaka's "World's End Dance Hall" would be included in the game, alongside new Module's for the song. The trailer also features the second half of the "Cat Food" PV, now showing off its specific Module. The trailer's music is that of the instrumental version of the then-unnanounced "Weekender Girl".[8] The game's official website was also revamped following the reveal which goes into more detail on the new mechanics and also displays images of the new character models for the main characters.[9] The game's development was also stated to be 39% complete.[10] The release date for the Vita version of the game was later announced as 30 August 2012 in an issue of the Japanese gaming magazine, Dengeki PlayStation.[11]

On 26 April 2012, the Weekly DIVA Station released an article detailing the improved Chance Time feature and the new Graph that appears on the results screen.[12] Another of the game's new mechanics, "Techincal Zone", was revealed during the game's demo exhibition at Niconico Chokaigi 2012.[13] On 24 May 2012, the game's titled was finalized as Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA f and its website received a new redesign. Following the finalized title reveal, two more songs were announced to be in the game: Buriru's "Secret Police" and Junky's "Melancholic". The announcement also included a look into the game's use of the PS Vita's AR feature, a new feature called "Portrait Mode".[14][15] A video digest for the two announced songs was uploaded online.[16]

On 5 June 2012, the game's boxart design was revealed, having been illustrated by KEI.[17] On 21 June 2012, eight more songs and their respective Modules were announced to be included in the game. These songs include the game's theme song "Odds & Ends" by ryo, and Hachioji P and kz's "Weekender Girl", whose instrumental version was used in previous trailers for the game. The remaining six songs include 40mP and 164's "Time Machine", Mitchie M's "Freely Tomorrow", halyosy's "Fire◎Flower", AVTechNO!'s "DYE", Tennen's "Ashes to Ashes" and yuukiss' "Nostalogic".[18] A new digest trailer featuring the 12 announced songs was uploaed online.[19] On 5 July 2012, the Module for "Odds & Ends", Heartbeat, as well as stills from the game's opening movie were revealed.[20] On 16 July 2012, the official Project DIVA channels uploaded a PV for a new commissioned song for the game, "Summer Idol" by OSTER project. The PV also featured brand new swimsuit Modules for the female characters.[21] In addition to "Summer Idol", the Weekly DIVA Station also announced on 19 July 2012 that two more songs, and their respective Modules, would be included in the game: Kurousa's "ACUTE" and wowaka's "Unhappy Refrain". This announcement also meant that the game would now have up to three singers for songs that allow it.[22]

On 26 July 2012, four more songs, including a new commissioned song, were announced to be included in the game: TENKOMORI's "The MMORPG Addict's Anthem", hachi's "World's End Umbrella", Jesus' "Remote Controller", and sasakure.UK's "Negaposi*Continues". Details on the game's AR Mode was also announced, which included details on "AR Live Mode", which doubled as an announcement for vocaliod-P's "1/6 -out of the gravity-" being featured in the game exclusive to AR Mode.[23] A new PV narrated by Miku's voice provider, Saki Fujita, that goes over the game's mechanics was uploaded online.[24] On 27 July 2012, Weekly DIVA Station revealed the models for the winning Yukata Modules from piapro Collab contest for the game. A new digest video featuring all of the announced songs so far was also uploaded online.[25][26]

On 7 March 2013, the day of the PS3 version's Japanese release, SEGA posted an image of Miku on their English Facebook page, asking fans to like and share the image if they would like to see the PS3 version of the game released in Western territories.[27] On 6 June 2013, SEGA confirmed the game would be released in Western territories in August 2013. A retail release in North America was announced, as well as a digital release on the PlayStation Network in North America and Europe.[28] In November 2013, Project Diva f for PlayStation Vita was announced for America and Europe for early 2014.

Song List[]

There are a total of 44 songs available in Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F. Thirty-three of the songs are obtained normally by playing through the game, four songs are only available through AR Live / Live Studio Mode, based on Daiba de DIVA at Joyopolis, one song is DLC and must be purchased from the PlayStation Network, although it is exclusive to the Asian versions of the game. The remaining six songs are included with the PS3 version, but were released as DLC for the Vita version of the game. The song "Ievan Polkka" also returns, reprising its role as a tutorial song for the game.

Regional Differences[]

Upon its release, the English version of Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F features the following localization changes:

  • All in-game menu text has been fully translated or localized into English. Text that was already in English in the Japanese release were given slight adjustments (e.g. "Chance Time End" becomes "Chance Time Over")
  • Most of the song names were either given translated English names or were romanized from their original Japanese names.
  • All song lyrics in Japanese are displayed in Romaji (while any katakana words made to sound like an English word were written in full English and in full capitals). There are no full English lyrics for any of the songs, (with the exception for "DYE" which is sung almost entirely in English).
  • The note ratings "Fine", "Sad", "Worse" were changed to "Good", "Bad", and "Awful" respectively.
  • The result rankings "Cheap" and "MissXTake" has been changed to "Lousy" and "DropXOut" respectively.
  • The opening text in "World's End Dance Hall" is changed from "Another time, Another place; A battle of two girls beginー" to "In another time, in a land far away...; Two girls prepared for battleー"
  • The Dreamcast logo in "Remote Controller" is changed from orange (the console's logo in the Asian region) to blue (the console's logo in the PAL region).

Promotion[]

A playable demo of the game was announced to be featured at the Niconico Chokaigi 2012 event from the 28–29 of April.[31] The game was also present at a booth at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2012, where a partially translated version of the game was playable. The demo featured "Cat Food" and "World's End Dance Hall", both retaining their lyrics in Japanese, but the menu items have been translated to English. The demo was placed there in order to gauge interest for the game for a potential localization and the response was said to be good, although there were no official plans to localize the game at the time.[32][33] From 23 June–4 August 2012, a trial session for the game that took place at 13 venues in 9 cities in Japan was held. The demo featured "Melancholic", "Weekender Girl", "World's End Dance Hall", and "Odds & Ends" as playable songs, and those that played the demo at the venues would receive an exclusive A4 clearfile.[34][18] From 28 July–26 August 2012, SEGA held a "Touch & Try Tour 2012 summer" tour that at 11 SEGA affiliated locations where attendants can play another demo of the game. Attendees would also be gifted with limited edition neck straps and fans.[35]

Pre-order bonuses for the PS Vita version of the game include a specially designed protective film for the portable console featuring Miku. The finalized version of the protective film was illustrated by iXima.[36][15] A limited edition PlayStation Vita featuring an illustration of Miku on the console's backside by Ikushima was released on 30 August 2012 with the packaging also included a copy of Project DIVA f that features a slightly different boxart cover, an exclusive AR card, an exclusive protective film. The packaging for the PS Vita and the AR card were also iillustrated by iXima.[37][17] Also released on the same day as the game was an accessory set that featured a cleaning towlette, a PS Vita cardcase, a small pouch with an illustration by TNSK, 2 sets of sticker sheets, a chain strap, and an original charm.[38][39] Specific reatilers have also provided their own bonus items when pre-ordering the game, including clearfiles, illustration papers, cards, tapestries, posters, etc.[40][41][42][43][44]

On 13 July 2012, SEGA and the Project DIVA team were looking to recruit people for a flash dance commercial to "Weekender Girl" for a commercial for the game.[45] The official channels also uploaded videos of the choreography that would be used.[46][47]
